Walden Elementary
We love how our elementary students come to school with hearts full, minds open, and curiosity bursting at the seams. Walden School, as the only K-12 public or private Montessori school in the state of Utah, is founded on Maria Montessori’s philosophy of education with an emphasis on independence, freedom within limits, discovery, and developmentally appropriate learning activities. Her method is based on a profound respect for all aspects of a child’s cognitive, academic, psychological, physical, and social development. Montessori schools seek to create learning environments where discovery and interest help guide the learning process.
Our classes are unique and are built around the way children naturally learn and thrive. Classes typically are made up of 2-3 year age levels in order to allow children to learn and grow at one’s own rate. The classrooms themselves are beautifully described by Montessori educator and author, Ruth Hurvitz:
The classrooms are beautiful by design. They are set up in an open style, with work areas throughout the room and materials available on accessible shelving. Most lessons are given to small groups or individual children while other children are working independently. The school uses stories, Montessori materials, charts, time lines, objects of nature, treasures from the wealth of cultures around the worlds and sometime conventional tools to teach the children. Guided by the teacher, Montessori students actively participate in planning their time and taking responsibility for their work. ~Ruth Hurvitz
Our students are guided by the tenets of respect for all, peaceful community building, and living responsibly in a diverse and beautiful world. Come and see what a true Montessori school has to offer.
